Stroud Book Festival: Amy Jeffs "A New Legendary of Heroes, Humans and Magic" We should be as drawn to medieval saints’ legends as we are to myth, folklore and fairy-tale. Today, the once famous tales of saintly heroes are all but forgotten, especially in the secular West. This is a wrong that renowned author, printmaker and art historian Amy Jeffs aims to put right in “Saints”, her captivating latest treasury of a book which resurrects resounding legends, born of the medieval cult of saints. Roving from Ireland to Turkey and North Africa, and from “Scoithín: The Sailor on the Plain”, to “Thomas Becket: The Rose and the Lily”, this glorious book is illustrated with paper cut-outs, and printed on black paper thus demanding “thinking in light” in a way that is metaphorically consistent with the subject matter. We are thrilled to welcome Amy to Stroud Book Festival, and to the wonderfully appropriate setting of Stroud’s parish church, to discuss the saintly inspirations behind the book. |
